Last week, Katie, Olivia, and Alex went to New Palestine Elementary on Wednesday. I missed the lesson; however, they taught the "Basics of Being an Athlete" to Mrs. Meyer's second grade class. There activity with the students went well, and I was disappointed I missed it. This week, Alex and I went back to Mrs. Meyer's second grade class to teach the "Nutrition" lesson. We were shorted handed due to Katie and Olivia participating in another volunteer activity. This was the first time any of us were going to teach the updated nutrition PowerPoint. Alex and I had some issues with the PowerPoint because it was our first time teaching this information. There was an error in it that we now need to fix. The children still had a good time, but it wasn't the smoothest lesson ever. Alex and I both learned something new from the kids though, many children swallow their tooth when it comes out. This provided us both a great laugh. We hope the next lesson will be better. The "Nutrition" PowerPoint that is now fixed is displayed below.

Since last post, we visited two new classrooms. On Tuesday, January 22, Katie, Olivia, Alex, and I went to Mrs. Walker's 4th grade class. We taught our "Basics of Being an Athlete" lesson (Shown below). The kids participated and answered questions. Hopefully, they learned the importance of teamwork and other essential aspects in being a successful athlete. The next day, we went to Mrs. Landis's 2nd grade class. We did the "High School Sports" lesson. This presentation aims to get students excited for sports. When we asked, "Who plays sports?" nearly all of the 2nd graders raised their hands. The children were very active and interested in our lesson, which made it fun. The future looks bright for New Palestine High School sports. This current week, we have not had time to go to any classrooms. We have had two e-learning days, so it has been an uneventful week. We hope to go to more classrooms in the following weeks when the weather gets better. NP Play took a break over winter break. Since school is back in, we have started working on advancing and continuing NP Play. First, we had to update our next steps on the board in Mr. Large's classroom. Also, we created an outline of what we will be doing for our project in the upcoming weeks. After that, we all worked on new PowerPoints. We made a PowerPoint over the basics of being an athlete and upgraded our nutrition lesson. With these, we plan on interacting with older students in grades 2-4. We hope to make an impact on these young students' lives. Currently, we are waiting for teachers to respond. It has been frustrating trying to get teachers to answer. Hopefully, when teachers respond back, we will be able to accomplish more and hold activities in the gym or outdoors. This Wednesday, January 16, we went to Mrs. Copeland's kindergarten class. Katie and Olivia had already visited her class before and taught them our sports lesson. Today, we taught the students about sugar. The kids payed attention, had fun, and hopefully took a step to living a healthy life.
As Lydia and I's Ronald McDonald's Snuggles and Snacks service project came to a close, I joined Alex, Katie, and Olivia in their NP PLAY activity. NP PLAY aims to educate elementary students about the benefits of playing sports in high school and eating healthy. There are two lessons that we teach students. The first lesson informs students on the different sports available at the high school and the benefits of playing a sport. The second lesson aims to teach elementary students the importance of eating healthy and avoiding sugar. Our goal is to get the students more involved by playing sports and exercising with them. Currently, the weather does not permit us to do this. If we are able to attain gym time, we could start exercise activities in the gym. If we cannot secure gym time, we will have to wait until the weather warms up. So far, we have gone to Sugar Creek Elementary and taught two lessons on the sports we have at the high school. We went to Mrs. Merritt's class on December 5 and then Mrs. Benson's class on December 10. The day we visited Mrs. Merritt's classroom, we spoke to the Sugar Creek Elementary gym teacher, Jessica Sostre, to check for available gym slots. Jessica said that she has gym classes going on at our available times; however, she mentioned that we could teach her class certain sports and activities if we wanted. This is the next step for NP PLAY. The current schedule for our lessons, pictures from our lessons, and the presentation slides we show are displayed below. |
